The Funhouse
The Funhouse
Death filled the pages of Dean Koontz the ‘Funhouse’, starting out on a dark and stormy night, like all horror stories usually do, a woman alone in a carnival trailer listens to her deformed monster child roaring and crying. Sipping on her liquor, she thinks on what to do, knowing that the night may end in death. She eventually kills the baby, the evil that was sent to earth by the devil she believes, a child out of wedlock. Her husband the Barker comes to his home and finds his child, the one he loved dead. He beats his wife and kicks her out, warning her to never come back, ever!
Several years later the young woman, now grown has a new life, a new family. She has that horrible memory buried inside her, she has turned to the bible and alcoholism. She would never tell anyone about her horrible past.
The novel focuses now in the newer chapters on her sixteen year old daughter Amy, who is in high school, and pregnant. She keeps this pregnancy and secret, especially from her bible thumping mother. She only has two options, an abortion, or run away with the father who is abusive to young Amy. These chapters are pretty intense, she picks an abortion and that’s the way she goes, she and her best friend Elizabeth (Liz) pay for it. I was a little upset at this whole build up in particular. There were parts where you thought that the baby would be born and be deformed and try to kill her, but then its like okay it’s called Funhouse what’s going on here?
After all this we find out that the Fair is coming to town, Amy’s little brother is really excited about going but of course the mother strongly enforces to never going to a Fair ever in their lives. And with good reason. Liz thinks that Amy needs to get her mind off of what all has happened and go on a date with a new guy in school named Buzz. They all decide on going to the Fair, Amy tries to get Liz and her boyfriend Richie to change their mind and go to a movie, but against her mother’s wishes they all decide to go to the fair.
They arrive at the fair, smoking weed, and going every which way. A man walks up to Amy and smiles, giving her free tickets to the funhouse, the man thinks he knows who she is, she looks so familiar, he believes that it is the child of the bitch that killed is child. Amy and her friends, weirded out by the guy don’t go to the funhouse, but instead go to a fortune tellers booth, the woman there is weirder than the funhouse Barker, telling them all to leave at once! That they will all die of they stay.
Amy thinks it’s a perfect time to leave, but Buzz and the others think up a great plan, spend the night at the Fair, in the funhouse! What a perfect idea, sex, drugs, and more sex! They go to the Funhouse, and in they go for good. Who will come out of the funhouse alive? If any of them, I don’t want to spoil what happens in that funhouse, but there is a terrible monster that lives in there, could it be the child that was once thought killed by Amy’s mother? You will just have to read and find out, in the FUNHOSUE….
