Driving, Its something we all must do, yet studies have proven that most young adults under the age of sixteen don’t yet properly know how to control their two ton speeding death wagon. This is a serious concern and one which was addressed by RTA in their gripping novel “A guide to the Driving Test.” Brilliant would be a gross understatement when describe the complexities of this novel, how it was able to be both informative as well as entertaining still baffles yet compels me to analyze this novel further. Chapter four, “Vehicle Control” still brings me to tears upon each reading of its tragic metaphors. It is a novel which leaves you thinking, yet not wanting more, a point which I shall explain later.
Its plot is simple at first glance, to give young drivers information which may critical for success when attempting their drivers test. However once you get four pages in it isn’t hard to see the author’s true intent. Chapter two “Before you start” is where the novel begins to explore the various methods of social oppression. “Bookings made by phone or online can be paid for by credit card only” (RTA 4). In this sentence alone, the RTA relies heavily on irony to show how many lower class families are born into a disadvantage. By callously ignoring the fact that not everyone can afford a credit card, the books dark humour quickly turns to social satire which is impossible to ignore. It is both gripping and chilling at times and wont quickly leave your mind after putting the book down.
Yet the book isn’t all about the serious complications of living in a western society, as chapter five “Test Results” breaks into a prolonged humors flashback which is guaranteed to leave the reader in stitches. The humor in this section is dry fast and witty “You are required to complete the whole test to get a pass” (RTA 22) and frankly my style. If you don’t find the humor in that last sentence my readers then I’m afraid you have lost your funny bone as even my dead grandmother came to life after the cracker. Yet what is most amazing about the humor is that it doesn’t take away any of the impact which the conclusion has.
Lets face it, every novel needs a strong climax and conclusion and “A Guide to the Driving Test” finale is by far the most gripping piece of literature I have ever read. It’s just the finality of the whole situation which is designed to affect you and it is impossible to ignore. However unlike other greats such as “Pork Roast Bake and Forty other Summer Recipes” This ending does not leave the reader desperate for more. There’s no need, in just twenty eight short pages, every subplot, main theme, hell everything has reached a satisfied conclusion. I don’t want to give too much away however all I can say is I will never be able to look at CD players the same again.
This novel is nothing short of amazing, and deserves a place amongst the greats, however rumor has it that the RTA is trying to get a movie license in the work and this is something I greatly oppose. We all remember the flop which was “Greener Gardening Tips”, an experience we would all like to forget. So buy the book now, before Hollywood has a chance to destroy it to, and enjoy a true modern classic.
Notes: Ok well this was rushed but I havnt read a real book in ages, only uni text books so yeah. I did this more as an opinion peice as well as opposed to a school project, because quite frankly school book reports can go fuck themselfs. If I wanna talk about my own opnion Im going to say its my opinion god damnit. I is a letter and Im gunna use it. Also yeah hope you got a laugh out of it, as it was more ment for comedy then a serius review.
