Foxes also known as kitsune in japan are a common subject of Japanese folklore. It is known that the more tails a fox has, the more powerful it is. Once a fox attains its ninth tail, it gains immortality. However for a fox to grow the first eight tails, it requires eighty years. The tricky part came when a fox had eight tails; there was no absolute way for a fox to gain the last tail. Even though for the previous tails, it only takes ten years to grow one, it isn’t the case for the ninth.
However, at this stage even though the fox only has eight tails and isn’t an immortal yet, it already has the powers to grant wishes. For its magical power to grant earthly riches, it is seek by men since ancient time. But there is a catch, whenever an eight tailed fox grant a wish; it loses one of its tails. The story starts with an eight tailed fox and a man which it met on its journey to attain the ninth tail.
‘Tell me a wish you have and I will grant it.’ The fox said to the man in front of it. There was no choice, the human had seen it and without immortality, the fox could easily be killed by the man. The fox has no one else to blame other than its own bad luck. It already knew by then that it was going to lose one of its tails and it would have to wait for another eight years to regain the tail lost today.
‘I have no need for any gold of this world. I have nothing I need. I don’t know what I should wish for.’ The man replied without much thought. ‘There got to be something.’ The fox replied impatiently. It wasn’t the first time it had met someone who was so indecisive.
‘Alright, I know what I want…’ The man said slowly.
‘I want you to have nine tails.’ The man completed his sentence in one breath.
The fox’s eyes widened a moment, finally understanding why it had the power to grant wishes. ‘It was never to grant the wish of others but it was to wait for a selfless man willing to fulfill my dream.’ The fox said gratefully as the ninth tail sprouted from its back.
For everyone who has dreams, there is only so far we can go. Sometimes all we need is to meet someone who is willing to take us there. Have you meet that someone yet?
