Survivor has always been my favorite show, with 20 completed seasons and the 21st season currently airing. This show had developed from a simple social game to full blown strategy play, completed with blindsides and betrayal. Out of the 321 contestants who had participated in the 21 seasons, my favorite player is from the first season. The player is Richard Hatch.
Coming into the first season of the game, with nothing as their references, 16 people participated in survivor for the very first time. The 16 of them only know that if they are voted off, they are out of the game and losing their shot at the million dollars. No one knows the absolute way to be the last man standing. If in the whole season, people were voting with their heart, survivor wouldn’t be as interesting. The turning point was when Richard Hatch decided to form the very first alliance in survivor. With an alliance consisting of Hatch, Sue Hawk, Rudy and Kelly, the Tagi four ruled the game.
At a time when player were still voting with their hearts, the four of them voting the same way ensured that they were forming the majority instead of leaving it to luck. This can be seen by the very first vote after the merger. With a crazy vote of 4–1–1–1–1–1–1, Gretchen was voted off. However the significance of that tribal was that other than the alliance of four, none of the other players had any idea what they were doing. At most, they were just hoping that they were not the one voted off that night.
It can be argued that being in the first season; the difficulty level was very low. But it should be noted that for every seasons after Survivor Borneo, there have been the presence of alliances. With the completion of Season one, the formation of a strong, loyal alliance has become the reference of future players.
Other than being the first person to form an alliance, Richard Hatch can also be noted for his huge entertainment value both in the game and outside of the game. Other than his game-play, his cocky personality is very suitable for the reality show. Even on Day 1, when Richard Hatch claimed that the cheque for the million already had his name on it; that was when people started to remember him. Some might hated him for his cockiness while others may be amazed at his confidence. But it was good entertainment. Over the week as the viewers get to know him better, how Richard is a homosexual and his crazy strategy of walking around naked. Even for viewers who don’t really get what survivor is about, it was just pure entertainment. And the moment when he won the final tribal council by a narrow 4-3 vote, it was a perfect ending to season 1.
